Tubular Breasts: Understanding The Condition and Treatment Options

The condition called Tuberous Breasts results from your breast tissues failing to develop adequately during the puberty stage. Tubular breasts create an imbalance in breast tissues leading to the formation of irregularly shaped breasts that are not round. This condition results in large areola and nipples pointing downwards. Additionally, there could be a gap in your breasts.

Tuberous breasts affect your breastfeeding capability after giving birth. The shape and appearance of the breasts lower your self-confidence, and psychologically impact the way you view yourself. Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure that you can choose to improve the appearance of your breasts.

The Plastic Surgeon may refer to tubular breasts as breast hypoplasia or tuberous breasts.

Understanding The Signs Of Tubular Breasts:

The size and shape of a person’s breast varies widely, but the breast size and shape is mostly known to be decided during puberty. Some common features of tubular breasts may include:

  1. Breast tissues are cylindrical in shape rather than being round. This cylindrical shape remains the same throughout the breast, from its base till the end.
  2. Constriction of the tissues at the base of the breast.
  3. Sagging appearance of the breasts because of high placement of the lower breast fold.
  4. Hypertrophy of areola, meaning that the areola appears unusually large.
  5. In some instances, only one breast is affected; a tubular breast can appear undeveloped compared to the other breast. In other people, both breasts are irregular in shape.

Causes Of Tuberous Breasts:

Tubular breasts occur due to connective tissue that does not develop normally in puberty. It is still not determined why this happens. There have been studies showing that it is either due to a hormonal imbalance during puberty or a genetic alteration in fetal development. More research is being done to find out the exact cause of tubular breasts

Development of breasts is a slow process in people having tubular breasts during puberty. This means that the breast gets limited time to fully develop.

On the other hand, people without tubular breasts experience rapid growth of their breasts during puberty.

How are Tubular Breasts Diagnosed ?

Diagnosis is normally done using a physical exam carried out by a qualified Plastic Surgeon who assesses  the  breast size, shape, symmetry, quality of the skin, size of the areola, distribution of breast tissue, and the entire breast base.

It should be noted that there is no particular aspect that defines tubular breasts. Some women may have an unobtrusive difference, while others may have significant constriction and asymmetry.

It is for this reason that a consultation with a qualified Plastic Surgeon  is necessary before considering treatment options. It is not all about making the breast bigger; the  goal is to comprehend the actual shape and the approach that can be undertaken to achieve balanced results

Let’s Walk You Through Tubular Breast Treatment Options

The type of treatment varies depending upon the individual anatomy, degree of constriction, volume of the breasts, degree of asymmetry, and desired result of the patient. There is no broadly applicable treatment that can work for everyone.

  • Breast Implants:
  • Breast Augmentation via Implants

Breast Implants can be used to enhance a breast where there is need for breast enlargement. Implantation increases volume and enhances the overall breast shape.

However, treatment for correction of tubular breasts is more intricate  than standard breast enhancement procedures. Placing an implant does not necessarily treat the constriction present in the breast.

Therefore, in addition to augmentation, the Plastic Surgeon may advise you to combine breast implants with other procedures, designed to to enhance the overall breast shape and distribution of tissue.

  • Fat Transfer / Fat Grafting

Fat transfer or fat grafting is a procedure whereby fat tissue is extracted from some part of the body and then injected into the breasts.

The treatment option is useful for providing some additional volume, enhancing the overall shape and contour, correcting asymmetry, and in cases where there has been any previous corrective procedure performed.

However, there is a limit to how much fat can be used for transferring; thus, it may not be enough for severe conditions.

  • Areola Correction:

For women suffering from tubular breast deformities, the areola might seem larger than usual or even disproportionate. Reduction of the areola can be done in order to achieve more proportional breast dimensions.

This can be combined with other procedures, where necessary, especially in cases wherein the areola contributes significantly to the overall appearance of the breast.

  • Breast Lift and Tissue Reshaping

Based on your body structure, either a breast lift procedure or a tissue-reshaping procedure will be suggested to you by the Plastic Surgeon. Such types of procedures can help redistribute the breast tissues within and enhance its overall shape.

For  women who have severe constriction of the breasts, reshaping of the tissues is of utmost importance for restoring the natural breast contour

For many patients, the most effective treatment might actually involve a multi-step surgical approach (combination of procedures) including tissue sculpting, breast augmentation, fat grafting or correction of the areola.

This procedure has to be individualized and not just depend on the size of the breast alone. The goal is to provide a proportioned shape to the breasts while at the same time preserving symmetry of the breasts.

Selecting The Most Appropriate Approach

Treatment of tubular breasts is not just about augmentation alone. An effective treatment will take into consideration the breast foot print, tissue distribution, skin envelope, areola, symmetry, and individual  proportion of the patient.

A qualified Plastic Surgeon can assess all these aspects and suggest the appropriate technique for the patient.

The objective here is not to give the patient an ideal breast shape per se but rather one that looks proportionate and natural and subtle.
